Episode 5 – The Final Stretch

  • Somewhere in Texas, early December, 2039

“Hold your ground! Don’t give them an inch, they’re about to...”

The clarion voice of Sergeant Ingram was cut short by an explosion. He could feel the deep boom in his bones, the final exclamation point to the life of the brave trooper and his missile operator crew.

Bellamy let out an exasperated sigh and turned towards the radio operator, hiding behind a boulder next to him and started shouting at the terrified petite blonde woman. One of the people recruited in Jacksonville – he didn’t even know her name. Her unit had been decimated by the Clayburn assault and she was the only person to get out of the conflagration that consumed her vehicle. Now, she was a part of his troop by the virtue of hiding in the same ditch.

“We lost another crew. We’re getting hammered out here... you...” he pointed at her, snapping his fingers.

“Welter, sir.”

At least she was responsive, that was good. He thought of trying to calm her down a bit, but he had never been good at that kind of thing, he thought. He at least tried to.

“Right, love. Calm down. Listen up. I need you to call the HQ and tell them what’s going on here. We’re getting slaughtered.”

Her cheeks flushed red and she looked down.

“I... I don’t know how to operate the radio, sir.”

“Why the hell do you have it then,” he replied incredulously.

She responded, her eyes glued to the ground.

“I...”

“Well, spit it out, love!”

“I ran,” she almost whispered. “I grabbed it on my way, I thought it was supplies.”

He sighed once again. Tough times all around, he thought. Once you see someone burn alive, running away with the nearest backpack on your shoulders is generally a reasonable idea. Not to the squeaky clean generals, towering over large maps in air-conditioned bunkers, he thought – but, hiding in a gully with the gunfire and explosions creeping ever closer, he thought he might have done just the same thing. Too late for that now. The ravine was sealed shut and the area around them was swarming with Crimson Reavers that gave no quarter. Back to reality then, he shook his head.

“Fine. Give me that thing. I’ll take a look.”

It was an old Clansman set, built before he was born. He moaned silently. The PRC-349 was an unreliable piece of crap, carried around by some veteran soldiers as a backup. It was a relic, but it would have to do. He checked the device – the receiver, the antenna and the battery had all been previously connected – someone had been planning to use that thing and this was as far as the unlucky solder got.

He nodded to himself, activating the boxy device, setting the frequency to 39.675 MHz and the switch to L. Taking a deep breath, he picked up the microphone and started transmitting.

“Alpha One, this is... ah sod it. This is Bellamy, can anyone hear me? Over.”

He thought he could make out some voices over the static, but the reception was horrible.

“Say again, over!”

Finally, the radio came to life. A familiar raspy voice responded.

“Bellamy, where the hell are you? Get your ass to the bunker.”

He almost laughed out.

“Is that you, Locke?”

“Damn right it is!”

The voice drowned in what sounded like a long burst of autocannon fire. When it returned, it sounded far more serious.

“Tom, we’re getting hammered out here. If we don’t get to the bunker, we won’t last. We knocked out three of their tanks, but they just keep coming.”

Bellamy thought quickly. This was worse than he had anticipated. The attack started well and they overran the small garrison guarding the compound, but the bunker was sealed shut and they were having a hard time breaching the door. No wonder, he admitted to himself – a bunker such as this was not built to be breached by the first asshole that came across it. He had secretly fostered hope that Blackwood would have a few more tricks up his sleeve but now, he wasn’t so sure anymore. The unanticipated, early arrival of Clayburn reinforcement threw a proverbial monkey wrench into the whole plan. He had no idea how they could have made the trip so fast.

“Tom, are you still there,” the radio hissed again.

“I’m here,” he responded. Suddenly, his eyes felt heavy. The fatigue was getting to him.

“Blackwood and the techs just broke through. Seagrove and Grey are with him. They’re going inside. They’re going to open the main gate!”

Bellamy sighed with relief.

“Roger. Thank god. I’m on my way. Bellamy out.”

He turned towards the woman next to him and patted her on her shoulder.

“Right then. I hope you crawl better than you run.”
